This Is Not an Ashtray
Papegaaistraat 48, Ghent
10.2020-09.2021

For a year, Gustave Demoen lived in one of the most passed streets just outside the city center of Ghent. His bedroom was on the ground floor with behind the window a tramway stop. Opening his shutter in the morning, having just crawled out of bed in his underwear, the squeaking and rumbling of the shutter drew all the attention of passersby and commuters outside.
As a way to get back his privacy and to keep himself busy during the covid pandemic he turned his window into a showcase to display art. During that time all museums, galleries or alternative art houses had to closed their doors.

Under the windowsill had been written for years in chalk This is Not an Ashtray. Despite all the rain, the text had remained. So this became the title of the vitrine. Or TINA for short.
